MADEIRA ISLAND
Where the views meet the island.
Here, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, 500 km from the African coast, 1000 km from the European Continent and 1h30m flight from Lisbon, the eye meets the Madeira Archipelago. Discovered by the Portuguese sailors in 1419, who saw in the horizon the islands of Madeira, Porto Santo and Desertas, later discovering the Selvagens, the islands were unified by a common soul. Its privileged geographic position and its mountainous orography make Madeira a paradise of astonishing climatic amenity with mild average temperatures and moderate to high humidity. Average temperatures range from 23ºC in Summer and 17ºC in Winter. Sea water is also very mild in temperature, being influenced by the warm gulf stream, with averages of 22ºC in Summer and 18ºC during Winter.Madeira Island means beauty as far as the eye can see. The Views Hotels invites you to see Madeira as you have never seen before – the Island from the point of view of 3 unique places, where you can observe and live the greatness of the Atlantic Ocean, the joyful and cosmopolitan vibe of Funchal and the inner peace brought by nature.
600 YEARS OF HISTORY
Where the views meet the island.
Little more than 600 years have passed since the discovery of Madeira Island, but it was enough time to endow the region with a unique culture, tradition and heritage.
With the predominance of the Catholic religion on the Island, as you would expect many customs are related to this theme, like for example the masses, the “arraiais” (popular celebrations taking place at several parishes) and the philharmonic bands.
Gastronomy
Rich gastronomy characterized by a palette of exotic flavors and colors makes the delight of our visitors. The “bolo do caco” with garlic butter, the espetada, the black swordfish, the corn, and the drinks like poncha, niquita and the “pé de cabra” always complicate the decision in the choice of the menu.
Folklore
Folklore and the regional costume are the genuine manifestation of the cultural tradition of the Madeiran people. The typical “bailinho”, with its rhythm, music, and peculiar dances describes the local traditions, love, satire, and experiences. Traditional instruments such as “braguinha” and “viola de arame” complete the experience that more than seen should be lived, and the “vilões” (as the performers are known) involve the audience in their performance.
Exotic Fruits
A subtropical climate and the fertile soil of the island are the perfect ingredientsfor the delicious and exotic fruits that delight visitors and that fill any table withcolor and flavor. Avocados, anonas, bananas, pitangas, tabaibos, mangoes, grapes, passion fruit and guavas, are just some examples of unique flavorsthat make anyone’s delight.
MADEIRA WINE
Recognised worldwide for its unique quality and flavour, Madeira Wine is produced from authentic varieties of grapes grown on the island. The winemaking process, which includes the technique of ‘estufagem’ – heating the wine to intensify its flavours – gives it exceptional longevity and a diversity of styles, from dry to sweet. This wine is undoubtedly one of Madeira’s greatest prides, reflecting the island’s heritage.
Madeiran Embroidery
Madeira embroidery, made with linen, silk, cotton and organdie, is a symbol of the history and tradition of our land. It’s a meticulous art, crafted by the dedicated hands of our embroiderers, the result of whose exquisite quality is appreciated and coveted worldwide.
Sugar Cane
Sugarcane had an important highlight in the history of Madeira. It became known as “White Gold” and was one of the most important sources of revenue between the XV and XIX centuries. Today it continues to play a key role, this time through Madeira Rhum, whose quality is internationally recognized, having already been awarded several times. Engenho do Porto da Cruz is the only Rhum distillery in Europe to use steam as a driving force in the manufacture of this drink, that is the main ingredient of the infamous Poncha.
CANE HONEY (MOLASSES)
As a by-product of the sugar cane, we have the cane honey or molasses which is used in the most diverse delicacies of Madeiran gastronomy. It is a sweet syrup very rich in vitamins and minerals.
The Laurissilva Forest
Madeira Island is the proud guardian of an environmental heritage of the greatest importance.
The Laurissilva forest, which is around 20 million years old, dates back to the periods Miocene and Pliocene of the Tertiary Epoch. Still, the mark of time, which makes it a “living fossil”, does not seem to affect its vibrant energy.
This subtropical rainforest is composed mainly of species endemic to Macaronesia. It is a vast ecosystem that is home to a diverse range of fauna and flora, including trees, many of them centuries old, from the Lauraceae family (from which the Laurissilva forest owes its name).
Considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999, the Laurissilva forest is an unparalleled natural treasure. Walk along the paths and levadas that cross it and enjoy the privilege of connecting to this green spot in Madeira.
LEVADAS
A network of more than 2200 km of canals and 40 km of tunnels, is the result of the heroic effort of the Madeiran population from the 15th century to capture the water falling from the mountains in the north of the island and transport it to the fields in the south. Today they also serve as trails and are one of the main tourist attractions of the Island, providing unforgettable walks and stunning views. There are about 200 levadas in total, some very accessible, others very demanding, and potentially dangerous for beginners. You should therefore take into account some rules of conduct and safety before deciding to embark on this adventure.
